At the center of the complex there is a larger building which in the old days was associated with legends. It now is a common area offering our guests recreation and the opportunity to taste a rich selection of traditional dishes made from fresh, local ingredients that mother earth has been nursing in this area for centuries.
The position of the resort at an altitude of 815 meters on the Asterousia hills, against the wide open space which forms the Libyan Sea, sets the conditions for a unique climate. When conditions are proper, clouds race to take interesting formations around the village and dissipate just as fast. Also, the visibility is so perfect that the eye can see very far into the horizon, which has a soothing effect for the body and mind.

The THALORI resort combines in unique ways:

  • the Sea and the Mountain
  • History and Myth
  • Nature and Serenity
  • Vacations and Traditional life

The heightened sense of beauty which is evident in the resort and the services available can keep satisfied even the most demanding guests who need to establish a starting point for their exploration of the island of Crete.
It remains for you to find the resort and enjoy it!

The THALORI is a complex of fifteen traditional residences which were restored to reflect the particular style of vernacular architecture which was dominant in the host village of Kapetaniana in the very old days.

Kapetaniana is a small village perched at an altitude of 815 meters on the Asterousia range, west of the ΚOPHINAS peak. It commands a magnificent view of the Libyan Sea and combines in harmonious ways the wilderness of the mountain and the serenity and benefits of the sea.

This double character of the village, and its long history, rubs off on its buildings which combine Minoan stylistic influences and monastery architecture. The houses were constructed with defensive concerns in mind.

They have a lot in common with castles, while in the older days sheepfolds of various sizes formed an integral part of these fortified homes. They were built from materials resourced locally and fitted perfectly with the surrounding environment.

The uniqueness of this resort lies in the materials that were used during the construction works, e.g. locally resourced stones for exterior and interior walls, wood and marble.

The traditional fireplaces are another stylistic element. Perhaps the most eye-catching detail is the integration of rocks and rock formations with other building elements within the resort.
